Nagaland Governor extends Aoleang, Monyu greetings

Dimapur, March 31 (MExN): Governor of Nagaland La Ganesan has extended warm Aoleang and Monyu greetings to the Konyak and Phom communities, respectively.

In a press release on Friday, the Governor noted that Aoleang is an important festival for the Konyak Community of Nagaland. The festival is an occasion to welcome the New Year beginning with the spring season, to pray for a bountiful harvest of crops in the current year and also to recall the rich culture and traditional practices. “The celebrations intend to promote peace and progress of our society. It is also encourage to the youngsters to acquaint themselves with the valuable customs and traditions through of this feasts of amusements, dances and merrymaking year after year,” the Governor stated in his greeting. 

He also wished the “Konyak brothers and sisters, good health, happiness and prosperity.”

Similarly, the Governor stated that the Monyu festival is an occasion is to mark the end of the old year and welcome the arrival of New Year. It is to pray for a favourable sowing seeds and bountiful harvest. The main feature of Monyu, he said, is when the male members of the family show love and renewal of affectionate feelings towards their married daughters or sisters by presenting them purest of the rice-beer and specially prepared food, the Governor stated that “Such conduct reflects the general status of the Phom women that ‘they are respected and honoured.’” Planning and decision relating to community welfare to be implemented throughout the year are also decided during festival, he said.

The Governor also emphasised that the youth need to carry forward the essence of the festival and wished the Phom community to celebrate with it grandeur and in good spirit.
