In an outreach programme to save water and promote rain water harvesting, 20 beneficiaries were selected by the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya at Raj Bhavan, Kohima. The event held on July 6 at Durbar Hall was graced by the Governor and his wife Kavita Acharya.

An initiative of the Governor himself, the selections was conducted through a lucky draw in order to maintain transparency. A total of 20 beneficiaries were selected out of 45 applicants. The beneficiaries were provided 3000 litre water storage tanks each at a subsidized rate of 50 percent.

Piyush Goyal, Principal Secretary to Governor noted that the act is an innovative step by the Governor to promote rain water harvesting. Rain water harvesting technique, according to Goyal, will transform a State like Nagaland which receives ample amount of rain but face acute shortage of water during dry seasons. “It is high time, we wake up to the grim reality and take measures to conserve rain water and develop structures to ensure that there is no water scarcity in the dry months,” said Goyal.

Reading out a few lines from Julia Abigail Carbey's poem 'Little Things', Chairperson Banuo Koza expressed that small act of kindness and little efforts matters in the larger picture. Lauding the Governor's initiative, Koza noted that the initiative will go a long way in reducing water scarcity in Kohima. With ground water sources under extreme pressure in recent times, Koza pointed out that the practise of rainwater harvesting is becoming a popular practice which has several advantages. Besides the easy installment and environment friendly, rainwater harvesting also reduces the use of ground water.
