Subject-wise performance data from the 2025 and 2026 Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations conducted by the Nagaland Board of School Education indicated that while students posted strong gains in several subjects, core analytical and social science papers continued to remain areas of concern.
Mathematics remained among the weakest-performing subjects for the second consecutive year, improving only marginally from 63.21% in 2025 to 63.95% in 2026.
Philosophy also remained low, declining from 66.88% to 61.64%, while Political Science slipped from 73.73% to 71.59%.
Economics, despite recording the sharpest improvement, from 52.40% in 2025 to 67.07% in 2026, continued to be among the lowest-scoring subjects overall.
Fundamentals of Business Mathematics also remained in the lower range, improving modestly from 69.15% to 72.35%, while Sociology improved from 73.17% to 80.01% but still lagged behind many other papers.
Informatics Practices recorded one of the sharpest declines in 2026, with the pass percentage dropping from 87.47% in 2025 to 67.49%, a fall of nearly 20 percentage points.
At the same time, students recorded major gains in several subjects.
Music rose sharply from 78.87% to 95.59%, while Physics improved from 80.15% to 86.87%. Healthcare, Chemistry and History also registered healthy gains.
Among language papers, student performance remained the strongest for the second consecutive year, with most indigenous and language subjects consistently recording pass percentages above 95%.
In 2026, Ao led with 99.12%, followed by Lotha at 98.39%, Hindi at 97.86%, and Tenyidie at 97.26..
Overall, the data suggested that while students in Nagaland continue to perform strongly in language papers, vocational subjects, and several science streams, persistent challenges remain in mathematics, economics, philosophy, and other concept-intensive subjects pointing to the need targeted intervention.
