Nagaland: Irrational exercise? Two students’ unions flag issues with rationalisation

PRSU against transfer without reliever, ATSU for retention of teachers

PANSO (NOKLAK)/Aghunato, April 3 (MExN): Two students’ unions on Sunday expressed displeasure over the recent directive for ‘redeployment’ of teachers issued by the School Education Department on the recommendation of the Committee for rationalisation of schools & teachers, citing different ground realities.

The first was Pathso Range Students’ Union (PRSU), which expressed resentment against what it termed as ‘irrational exercise’ of transferring a teacher without reliever, in the name of rationalisation.

In a press release, the PRSU alleged that a teacher was transferred out from the Government Middle School Pathso Nokeng which is already running with shortage of teachers, without a reliever.

“While the school is already functioning with low strength of teachers, it is surprising to know that the department is carrying out such an exercise by transferring a teacher (with post) without studying the ground reality of GMS Pathso Nokeng,” stated the release  issued by PRSU President P Zuhing.

The school, which is a composite of Primary and Middle sections, has only 11 teachers to function the school of 10 classrooms and as a result, the teachers are facing immense hardship to cover the syllabus and limits the learning of the students to the full potential, it said.

Out of the 11 teachers, there are only two Graduate Teachers (GTs), it added.

The PRSU further informed that due to inadequate number of teachers in the school, even the community is trying its best to keep the functioning of the school afloat by sponsoring a teacher voluntarily.

Accordingly, the Union appealed the concerned department to look into the matter and to revoke the transfer of the teacher from GMS Pathso Nokeng, in the absence of a relieving teacher.

In must noted here that the School Education Department in a order on March 30 issued directive to ‘redeploy’ 110 teachers in Tuensang district on the recommendation of the recommendation of the Committee for rationalization of schools & teachers.

‘Teachers are directed to join her/his place of posting within 10 days from the date of issue of the order’ and no request for retention, re-posting or transfer will be entertained under any circumstances, it added.

Meanwhile, in another release, the Aghunato Town Students’ Union (ATSU) has urged the School Education Department for deployment and retention of teachers at the Government Higher Secondary School Aghunato.

ATSU President Hekavi Yeptho and General Secretary Nitsato Yepthomi in a press release stated the only functioning government school for Eastern Sumi tribe is functioning with shortage of teachers and the student community is facing huge difficulties.

From 2016-2019, a total of nine teachers have retired but no new appointments were made, it further maintained.
In the midst of such difficulties, the transfer of two teachers is creating further constraint for the students, it added.

The ATSU, thus, sought for early intervention to make appointments of the vacant post and also for retention of teachers in their respective posting for the greater interest of the students.
