
Dimapur, June 26 (MExN): Various NGOs, department agencies and district of Nagaland today organised programmes to observe the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which falls on June 26 each year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society.
Mokokchung: Mokokchung District Jail observed “International Day Against Drug Abuse & Illicit Trafficking” at the Jail Church with the inmates on June 26, 2013.
The resource person at the programme was Dr. I. Taka Pongen, MO In-Charge of District Jail Mokokchung. He spoke on the different uses of drugs and differentiated between psychotropic drugs and narcotic drugs and its abuses. Appealing the inmates to keep away from drug abuse and drug addiction, the Dr Taka asserted that ‘drugs are for healing and for management and cure’ and therefore one should not abuse it.
Earlier, the Superintendent of Jail, Imtiangshi Ao delivered the welcome speech while the Assistant Jailor Yisufi Sharu delivered the vote of thanks. The programme was chaired by Archila, Female Warder (Counselor) while the Warder (Counselor) Moasosang invoked God’s blessing.
It may be noted that there are 32 male inmates in the District Jail Mokokchung who are serving their terms for various crimes and offences.
Kiphire: The 7th Assam Rifles Kiphire post today observed ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ with KpNP+, IBAPWO and NGO’s at the camp with the message of ‘No to Drugs and Drug Trafficking’.
President of KpNP+ Tia, who spoke at the occasion shared the history of KpNP+ and said that it was established with an objective to help the people of the district to have quality life. He also informed that there are 75 persons in the district taking ART. He also shared his testimony. Stating that drugs is good for people but misuse is the problem the president also said, “it is time we have to live a healthy attitude towards positive people as there is discrimination in the society.”
Sharing the problem faced by the NGOs in the district, Lohomong Dist co-ordinator IBAPWO said, “we are working tirelessly to stop trafficking of drugs but even in remotest district of the state drugs are in abundance which because we are not getting support from the outside ad express his concern.” He expressed gratitude to 7 Assam Rifles for providing medicine to the organization where there were free distribution of medicine and check up.
Vice president NNP+ and others positive people also spoke on the occasion on ‘right to life and human rights.’
There was healthy interaction with the Assam rifles Jawans and the KpNP and IBAPWO after the session. The 7 Assam Rifles have also offered to extend any help in the form of medicine and other logistic support to the organization working for the welfare of the people.
Phek: The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed at Phek on June 26 at DPDB Conference Hall chaired by SDO (C) Warren Hollohon Yepthomi. The programme began with invocation prayer by Chivehu, Head DB (Sadar) Phek. The DC Phek, Neposo Theluo delivered the welcome address and highlighted the significance of the day and purpose for organizing the program.
SDPO Phek, Limi Sangtam and Dr. Rongsen, Pathologist, District Hospital Phek presented short speeches. They dwelt on the prevalent nature of Drug abuse in our society and different categories of Drug users generally observed, they also stressed the necessity and importance of curbing the menace of Drug abuse and Illicit trafficking as it poses a major health challenge and also hampers the growth and development of our society. The programme concluded with the closing remarks from the chair.
SCS: The Salvatus Christian Society (SCS) along with the rest of the world observed the international day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking at its office premises under the theme “make health your ‘New High’ in life not drugs’ on June 26, 2013. A press note issued by SCS Director Hucto Chophy stated that Kughaholi, ORW, SCS reflected on the significance of the day. Thereafter interactive session among the members present ensued. The programme was chaired by Tonilo, Nurse, SCS and was attended by clients, PE’s and SCS staffs.
