Nagaland joins protests against sexual assaults

Dimapur | April 15

The people of Nagaland, on Sunday, joined the rest of India in demanding safer environment for women in the country and justice for rape victims.

Massive protests were held across the country on April 15 as the gruesome rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Kathua of Jammu & Kashmir and another case in Unnao of Uttar Pradesh triggered an outrage and united the nation. Even as India protested, another murder of an 11-year-old girl was reported in Surat of Gujarat.

In Dimapur, a voluntary candlelight vigil was held at Supermarket Dimapur, where people from different walks of life attended to share their solidarity and demand justice for the sexual assault victims.

Using hastags like “Dimapur stands against Rape & violence against women,” “justice for all The Rape Victims,” and “justice for daughter of India,” the protestors called for “stringent execution law” by parliament for perpetrators of sexual crimes.

According to Dimapur24/7, an online forum which initiated the event, nearly 500 people attended the vigil. The protestors also brought candles and placards to mark the day.

A similar protest at Nagaland University’s School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD) saw more than 200 students take out a peaceful candlelight march to show resentment over the Kathua and Unnao incidents and “express their deep sorrow and solidarity” with the victims.

Different student associations and authorities of Nagaland University, SASRD organised the march.

“The people of Nagaland are much concerned for the justice of Kathu and Unnao rape case,” Kedirisi Namdaw, President, Student’s Union, SASRD stated in the event. Professor M. Aleminla Ao, Pro-Vice Chancellor (i/c) of NU, SASRD expressed deep pain over the incidents and also demanded justice for the victims.

A press statement from the organisers said it is high time for the human race to ask, “Do we need to become so communal that we leave humanity nowhere? Whatever happened to was communal but…We should think once whether we are still human or are we becoming something else with the due course of time.”
