Nagaland launches Rah-Veer award for Good Samaritans

Rs 25,000 reward for saving accident victims

Kohima, May 26 (MExN): Nagaland Transport Commissioner, Elias T Lotha has informed the general public on the issuance of the guidelines for Rah-Veer, an erstwhile Scheme for grant of Award to the Good Samaritan who has saved life of a victim of a fatal accident involving a motor vehicle by administering assistance and rushing to Hospital or Trauma Care Centre within the Golden Hour of the accident to provide medical treatment.

The scheme aims to motivate the general public to help the road accident victims in emergency situation, inspire and motivate others to save innocent lives, stated a DIPR report. 

The eligibility criteria is any individual who has saved life of a victim of a serious accident involving a motor vehicle by administering immediate assistance and rushing to Hospitals within the Golden Hour of the accident to provide medical treatment, it stated.

Financial Assistance (in the form of award) for each Rah-Veer (Good Samaritan) would be Rs 25,000 per accident, subject to the following provisions;

•    If one Rah-Veer saves life of one or more victims of a single serious accident involving a motor vehicle, amount of award will be Rs 25,000 only.

•    If more than one Rah-Veer save life of one victim of a serious accident involving a motor vehicle, amount of award i.e. Rs 25,000 will be divided equally among them.

•    If more than one Rah-Veer saves life of more than one victim of a serious accident involving a motor vehicle, amount of award will be Rs 25,0001 per victim saved subject to maximum Rs 25,0001- per Rah-Veer.

Every cash award would be accompanied with a Certification of Appreciation.

The scheme shall remain operational till the completion of the 15th Financial Cycle, i.e. till March 31, 2026.

Under Section 134A of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 and Rules for Rah-Veer notified vide Notification No. GSR 594E dated September 29, 2020, no Rah-Veer would be subjected to any legal proceedings without their consent. In case of any breach of protection provided to Rah-Veer under the aforementioned rules, the Rah-Veer would approach the Grievance Redressal Committee to be established by the States, UTs under chairmanship of concerned Deputy Commissioner, Collector, District Magistrate.
