Nagaland launches Rotavirus Vaccine Vaccination Campaign

Rotavirus Vaccine was officially launched at District Vaccine Store (DVS), Peren on August 2 with Tinu Jongshi, ADC Jalukie administering the first drop. One & Half month old baby boy Kangzangyipiong, son of Hiapoi from Jalukie town is the first child to receive the Rotavirus Vaccine drops in Peren District. Dr. Nukshisangla Jamir, DPO UIP/RCH along with Dr. Kevi Meyase, DPO NVBDCP and Dr Yetovi Tuccu, SMO CHC Jalukie, staff of CHC and DVS Peren were also present during the launching programme. Rotavirus Vaccine was launched at District Hospital, Phek on August 2. Dr. Kolhitso Khalo, District Immunization Officer in his speech said that Rota Virus is responsible for 40% of diarrhea in under-five children and accounts for 78000 deaths in India annually. Rota virus vaccine prevents diarrhea due to rota virus infection. Dr. Wetshelo, Sr. Pediatrician administered rota virus vaccine drops to the first beneficiary. Dr. Antoly Suu, Dy Chief Medical Officer, Dimapur administers the first five-drops of Oral Rotavirus Vaccine during the launching of Oral Rotavirus Vaccine as part of Routine Immunization Schedule under Universal Immunization Programme in the District on August 2. During the brief launching programme, Dr. Antoly Suu, stated that rotavirus diarrhoea is one of the leading causes of death among children below five years. Rotavirus vaccine (RVV) will protect a child from diarrhoea caused by rotavirus. She further informed that Rotavirus vaccine will now be included in the Routine Immunization Schedule of the District and beneficiaries can avail this vaccine free of cost from all government health units.
