Kohima, June 28 (MExN): Senior Executive Member in the Supreme Court Bar Association and senior advocate Ranji Thomas on Tuesday called upon Nagaland lawyers to get involved in community service and not only practice law for personal gain.

Interacting with the officials and members of Kohima Bar Association (KBA) at the courtroom, Thomas said it is the responsibility of Bar to propagate among the lawyers not only to take up cases to earn money but also indulge in community service to contribute to the society.

Thomas, who is also the former Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh, said “We as lawyers are not there to earn money only but also contribute to the society,” according to a press release from the KBA. The senior advocate is in Nagaland on an unofficial visit, it said.

He also suggested that KBA should open a separate cell within their office and keep collection of the latest judgements of the Supreme Court for lawyers to hold discussions at least once a week for better understanding of the judgements.

India is a democratic country but democracy is at the lowest level as no political parties in the country are concerned for the public, he noted, as he called upon the lawyers to stand together to protect ‘true secularism’ of country.

The Senior Advocate also assured KBA of his support relating to any case in the apex court and also to approach judges of the SC for conduct of workshops and seminars.

Thomas further appealed the KBA to spread legal awareness among the general public.

KBA president Khriedi Theünuo welcomed the SC Senior Advocate and also sought his support in the future endeavours, the release stated.
