Nagaland leading in springshed management

WOKHA, JUNE 10 (MExN): Nagaland is reportedly the leading state in the country on springshed management programme. As per a DIPR release, Land Resources Director, Albert Ngullie made the disclosure at the monthly meeting of the Wokha District Planning and Development Board on June 10, while tabling a report on the status of ground water governance through springshed management in Wokha town.

The springshed management was one among 4 major projects taken up by the Department in Wokha district. The other projects include rubber, areca nut and coffee.

According to Ngullie, springshed management encompasses a set of watersheds and aquifers integrated into a system that supplies water to the springs within the springshed. He noted that most of the springs’ potential hydrogeological recharge areas have been observed at Mount Tiyi and emphasised that a landscape-based approach is well-studied for addressing groundwater-related issues and recommended a multi-stakeholder partnership model.

Ngullie maintained that the success of the project relies on the convergence of efforts from the state, technical experts and NGOs in the district. Coordination among stakeholders, facilitation of fund mobilisation, supervision of works and Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) are crucial, along with strong support from local legislators and the district administration.

Mukesh Patil, a scientist at ACWADAM, noted that springsheds supplying drinking and domestic water to the inhabitants of Wokha Town need a holistic approach that includes understanding the current demand and supply situation, water quality and involving multi-stakeholder partnerships with all relevant departments in Wokha District.

Meanwhile, the board recommended for approval of the Registration of Wokha District Electrical Goods Retailers Union; establishment of Don Bosco School, Akuk; Government Primary School, Satsuphen, and Government Primary Health Care Centre at Satsuphen, Wokha.

The DPDB Chairperson also launched a booklet on preparation of GPDP and preparation of Panchayat Development Plan 2024-25 under the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA).

The DPDB members also visited the Doyang dam to inspect the ongoing Clean Doyang Mission. He called upon the stakeholders, Wokha District in particular, to come and be a part of the Clean Doyang Mission.
