Kohima, February 11 (MExN): The Nagaland Drugs Control Administration has directed all optical shops, optical establishments and optical retail outlets in the state to obtain mandatory registration under the Medical Device Rules, 2017 by June 30, 2026, failing which they will attract penal action including suspension of operations and seizure of medical devices.
Deputy Drugs Controller and Controlling & Licensing Authority, DoHFW, Martemjen Longkumer in an order noted that the Government of India had notified the Medical Device Rules, 2017 under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, regulating the manufacture, sale, distribution and stocking of medical devices.
The order pointed out that optical devices including spectacles, contact lenses, lenses for correction of vision, and related optical products have been notified as medical devices under the said Rules. It was observed that several optical shops in the state have been operating without obtaining the mandatory registration certificate as required under Rule-87A(2) of the Medical Device Rules, 2017.
The directive cautioned that failure to register within the stipulated time shall attract penal action as provided under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Medical Device Rules, 2017. It also instructed all optical establishments to treat the directive as most important and priority.
