Chümoukedima, November 16 (MExN): Department of Multimedia and Mass Communication, Patkai Christian College (A) in collaboration with Department of Mass Communication, Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh organized a talk on ‘Role of media in nation building’ to observe National Press Day on November 16.
The department stated in a press release that dwelling the role of media in nation building, the guest speaker and Associate Editor, The Morung Express, Dr Moalemba Jamir noted that nation-building process can be identified with the central values of the constitution of India, and that media should strengthen the feeling of civic solidarity.
He said media is essential in enabling a vibrant public-policy oriented dialogue, helps create a pluralistic and rational thinking in a diverse society like India, and act as a synthesis to diverse perspectives.
In the nation-building process exercise, media assumes the various role of being the informer, educator, and a vital constructive public platform of discourse, among others, he added.
Jamir asserted that media should be bounded by values it espouses by posing: ‘If media itself is not transparent and accountable to the public, how can it play the role of an active watchdog?’
He also gave a brief overview of current media scenario in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, focusing on transparency and accountability.
Dean, IT, RGU Prof Kh Kabi addressing the gathering while giving an insight on the importance of the day said, ‘National Press Day symbolises freedom and responsibility of the press which is the hallmark of journalism. It is also observed to acknowledge the immense role played by the press in nation building and to reaffirm its commitment as the custodian of democracy.’
HOD, Mass Communication, RGU Prof Uttam Pegu expressing happiness over the collaboration said both the departments can in future collaborate in a bigger way as part of exchange programme.
HOD, MMC, PCC Dr Dakter Esse deconstructing the concept of nation building stated, ‘The feeling of one-ness is engraved in the understanding of nation building. Being an integrated process, media significantly has advocated the idea of unification’.
On the day, departmental magazine named ‘Zeitgeist’ was launched by Principal PCC, Dr T Peiru and the guest speaker in presence of faculty and students from Patkai and RGU who connected through Google meet.
The other highlight was a media quiz coordinated by Rojenn Wahengbam and Sopei Rungsung. Team C- Motsuthung Ovung, Rahul Deuri, Chipemshon Khamrang, Tsuknugsenla, Wan-O, Lidiye Aye and Kikhruheno Casavi were adjudged the winner.
