NIESSR holds valedictory programme for first batch of MSW students
Dimapur, May 29 (MExN): North East Institute of Social Science & Research (NEISSR) organized a valedictory programme for its first batch of Master of Social Work (MSW) on May 28.
Sobunenba Longkumer, Director, Community Education Centre Society (CECS) addressed the MSW trainees as the chief guest. He stated that Nagaland is in need of young, dynamic and committed social workers who are ready to get into the field.
“The usual trend is that when you have a professional degree, the tendency is to look for a job which will allow you to sit in the office. However, if our mentality is to look for a job which makes you sit in the office, the very purpose of doing the Master of Social Work course is defeated,” he told the students. “Our villages need our expertise and the things that we are learning.”
He maintained that the priority should be to make all the amenities available in the rural areas, so as to develop our state. “Education should allow a person to do work and should also provide opportunity for the person to create avenues for employing other people,” he added.
He also shared about the importance of cultivating hope with positive attitude with anecdotes and incidents from his personal life.
Dr. CP Anto, Principal, NEISSR congratulated the students for successfully completing the course. “We have started together with a dream to set a trend in Nagaland and we have succeeded in being a trend setter,” he stated. He conveyed to the students that all the things they have done in NEISSR is the first in Nagaland as NEISSR is the first Master of Social Work institute in the state. He also exhorted the students to be trustworthy, honest and committed in their work as they start a new chapter in their lives as professionals in different settings.
He said that every student is gifted with a talent and the process of developing those talents had been initiated at NEISSR. “And it is the prerogative of the students to continue working on developing that skills and talents which had been identified and shaped by the MSW Course,” he added.
Altogether, 43 students will complete the course by middle of June, 2016 with specializations in Community Development (CD), Youth Development (YD) and Peace & Conflict Transformation Studies (PCTS), a press release informed. There are 20 students with specialization in Community Development, 12 students with specialization in Youth Development and 11 students with specialization in Peace & Conflict Transformation Studies. They will be the first batch of MSW Graduates under Nagaland University.
The outgoing students shared the change that they have undergone in their personal lives, on their attitudes and mentality after joining the MSW course at NEISSR, the release said.
