Nagaland: New Forensic Science Lab inaugurated in Dimapur

The investigative arm of the Nagaland Police got a boost with the revamping of an almost defunct Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL). The new FSL in Dimapur would effectively replace the existing one.  

Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton inaugurated the laboratory, located at Kachari Gaon, on September 27, stated a DIPR report.  

The DIPR report quoted the Dy.CM as emphasising the essential aspect of forensic science terming it as vital to establishing scientific evidence during the investigation of crime.  

“The primary role in collection and analysis of crime related physical evidence in order to come to a conclusion is crucial in providing the case in the court of law.”  

While stating that the law demands proving “the guilt of a person, beyond any reasonable doubt,” he underscored the need for “proper investigation supported by an efficient scientific aid to investigate.”  

On this note, he said that the new FSL is expected to providing conclusive evidence, which would hold in a court of law while ensuring the delivery of justice.  

"It is also imperative to identify and train police (investigating) officers in the emerging areas of new crimes," he maintained.  

He regretted the delays and resources lost with the Nagaland Police compelled to send investigative “exhibits” to FSLs outside the state. In this regard, he called for establishing a Forensic Science division soon.  

On the equipments available in the erstwhile FSL, he expressed satisfaction the lone Lie Detector was functional. DGP T. John Longkumer termed the revamping of the FSL as “a big step towards self-sufficiency in the field of medical legal issues for quick delivery of justice.” He also encouraged the FSL personnel to be diligent and continue to work hard.

At another programme, the DGP inaugurated the office of the DCP (Zone I) and DCP (Traffic). The new office building adjacent to the East Police Station was financed under the Police Modernisation Scheme 2015-16 at a cost of Rs. 90,62,200, informed the Executive Engineer, Dimapur, Police Engineering Project Vihokhe Sema.  

The work was allotted to TL Morung Construction in February 2016 with a construction time of 24 months.  

DGP Longkumer in his address said that while Dimapur alongwith the tag of ‘business capital of the state’ also attracts criminals of all kinds. Describing the working environment as challenging, he said, “Nevertheless, we have to be alert, since it is our job.”    

As officers, he said that the welfare of the “jawans” (constabulary) should also be looked into. On the busting of the call centre scam in Dimapur, he expressed confidence the investigation team would compile the requisite evidence to convict the accused persons in court.  

He further informed that the police department has received sanction to boost “beat policing” wich will be initiated soon.  

It was also informed that the Rotary Club of Dimapur donated water purifying system to the newly build office complex.
