The Kohima Deputy Commissioner (DC) has informed that a section of National Highway-29 at Chainage KM 175.350 (Old KMC Dumping Site) has been temporarily closed to all forms of vehicular traffic with immediate effect until further notice.

As per an official order, the decision taken in the interest of public safety follows a thorough assessment by the concerned authorities, which found that vehicular movement along the affected stretch poses a serious risk of accidents and further landslides, particularly under the prevailing weather conditions.

Accordingly, two alternative routes have been notified: the Jotsoma Bypass Road for Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs), and the Peducha Bridge–Tsiesema (10 Mile Road) for all heavy vehicles and other district-bound vehicles, all military/para-military vehicles, all compact/mid-size pick-up vehicles, and all types of heavy mid-size commercial passenger vehicles.

Violation of the order shall be liable for prosecution under relevant sections of law, DC Kohima B. Henok Buchem stated in the order.

Earlier, on June 23, the DC had issued a directive allowing the movement of non-transport LMVs from 6 am to 6 pm under strict regulations and permissible weather, but the road conditions appear to have deteriorated since then.
