Nagaland: NSDMA issues heavy rain alert for several districts

Kohima, October 7 (MExN): The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued a weather alert forecasting widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the state from October 8 to 11.

According to the NSDMA, localised thunderstorms and lightning accompanied by moderate to light rain are expected in most parts of the state during the period. Heavy rainfall, along with thunderstorms and lightning, is likely over Kiphire, Kohima, Mokokchung, Peren and Tuensang districts on October 9 and 10.

The authority warned that the conditions could disrupt communication and connectivity due to lightning strikes and high winds. Lowland and foothill areas, including Dimapur, Niuland, Chümoukedima, Bhandari, Baghty, Tizit and Tuli, are vulnerable to waterlogging and flash floods owing to high precipitation in the hills, it said.

Residents in flood-prone districts have been advised to keep important documents in safe places, evacuate low-lying areas if necessary, avoid entering floodwaters, and ensure electrical appliances are placed above ground level. They have also been urged to boil drinking water and remain cautious around open drains and flood channels.

In hilly districts, the NSDMA advised people to stay alert for possible landslides during heavy rainfall and prolonged damp weather, avoid the path of debris flow, and watch for sudden increases in stream levels or changes in water colour.

The authority urged the public to exercise caution and directed all District Disaster Management Authorities and related departments to remain on high alert to safeguard lives and property.

For emergencies, people can contact the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) through toll-free numbers 1070 and 112 (ERSS for Disaster Management) or call 0370-2291120 / 0370-2291122.
