Nagaland: NSHRC says it has taken cognizance of assault on college student

DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 8 (MExN): The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) on Thursday said it has taken cognizance of the assault of 19 year old college student of Tetso college by Anti Vehicle Theft Squad (AVTS) of Nagaland Police on January 29.

In this connection, the NSHRC informed that it has asked the Director General of Police, Nagaland to submit a report within one week.

The Commission also highlighted that since it came into existence, it has also taken up a number of cases including the two custodial death cases which happened last year at the Central Jail Dimapur and at the Chümoukidema Police Station. The two cases are proceeding on fast speed and they are likely to be disposed soon.

The Commission also visited the police stations, jails, hospitals, health centers, government schools and public distribution centres in the district of Kohima, Dimapur, Chümoukedima and Bhandari sub-division under Wokha district. After the visits, interactions with the officials of the departments were held and have called for action taken reports, it stated. 

Commission to embark on tour to Mon and Longleng 
In continuation of its effort to see that human rights are promoted and their violations prevented, the Commission is once again embarking on tours to remote areas of the State beginning from Mon and Longleng district during the third week of February, 2024. 

During the tour, anyone is welcome to meet the members of the Commission for interaction or submission of any complaints relating to violation of their human rights, it informed. 

During the visit, the Commission will visit police stations, jails, hospitals, health centers and public distribution centers besides interacting with CSOs including Church leaders and government officials. Such visits or tours will continue during the coming months, it added.
