The Christian Institute of Health Science and Research (CIHSR), College of Nursing (CoN) held its 13th Lamp Lighting ceremony for the new batch of BSc Nursing and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) at LG, Hall on November 17.

In total, 80 students undertook the oath during the ceremony which has been an ongoing tradition carried forth since Florence Nightingale first revolutionised the profession. It is part of the process before entering into clinical profession or becoming a professional nurse; and a symbol of dedication, and commitment carrying toward the tradition of love, caring and nurturing.

In her address to the gathering, chief guest, Captain Minimol Louis (retd) Professor cum Principal of Army Institute of Nursing, Guwahati viewed that nursing as a profession has an extremely high demand and will continue to be so. “I must agree that the nurses who will pass out from this institute will be an asset to individual patients and the society at large,” she said.

Among several aspects which Louis highlighted for a nurse to inculcate in their work were responsibility, humility, service with commitment, respect toward self and others above else.

At the same time, she noted that the core component of what it means to be a nurse was to have care towards the people under them as it involves having to engage with human beings constantly. “You have to be committed to what you are doing.”

When you work as a nurse, the patient should be safe in your hands and it will only come with professional excellence. For without which one cannot possess the required credibility, she added.

She also reminded the students of the fact that, as patients, “They have come to you because there is a need to, so that you have to realise it.”

“Today you are fortunate to be a part of this profession. Never forget the oath you taking,” she told the students.

Previously, an introduction of the chief guest was provided by Dr Christy Simpson, Principal of CoN CIHSR. While exhortation was give by Dr Sedevi Angami, Director of CIHSR.

The ceremony was attended by the parents and guardians of the nursing students.
