Nagaland observes Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking

Kohima, June 27 (MExN): Various organisation in Nagaland observed International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2020 on the theme ‘Better Knowledge for Better Care’ on June 26.

 

ARK Foundation and the Department of Social Welfare, Nagaland observed the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Kohima and Dimapur on June 26. 


Kohima: In Kohima, it was observed in collaboration with the Prison Authority, District Jail Kohima. Chairing the programme, Ketho Angami, President, ARK Foundation mentioned that substance users are more susceptible to COVID infection due to an underlined health condition. Therefore, he urged everyone to keep away from the use or abuse of any sort of substance even after being released from the prison.


K Wango Langsym, Assistant Director, Social Welfare who is also the Nodal Officer for drug related programs in the state encouraged the prisoners to live a healthy life and think positive about their terms in the Jail by taking it as an opportunity to reform oneself. 


C Motsothung Yanthan, Superintendent of Police, Jail and Renbo, ARK Foundation also spoke while Teisi Thou, Assistant Jailer delivered the vote of thanks. 


Later, the organizers also distributed essential commodities and food items all the prisoners.

 

Dimapur: In Dimapur, ARK Foundation, Social Welfare and Bethesda Youth Welfare Centre jointly collaborated to observe the day. They distributed mask and food items to drug users who are currently under the OST maintenance treatment for their Opiod dependency and “undergoing day to day hardships of daily survival and rendered homeless.” A brief orientation on the importance of OST maintenance and continued intake of OST was delivered by the staff of the center. 

 

Prodigals’ Home: The Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCA), Prodigals’ Home, Murise Village, Dimapur commemorated the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking under the theme, ‘Better Knowledge for Better Care’ on June 26.


Residential Counsellor, Longching Konyak, dwelled on the significance and impact of commemorating the annual event. 


During the programme, an Art Competition on the theme, ‘Say No to Drugs, Yes to Life’ which had 24 participants from the villages of Murise, Tsithrongse and Diezephe was exhibited wherein Alongdi Sangtam and B Moses Sangtam were declared winners.


The programme, along with the staff and residents of the centre, was attended by the church members of Murise and Tsithrongse villages. Residential Counsellor, Zubemo Lotha chaired the programme while the Youth Director, Tsithrongse Baptist Church shared his perspective on addiction. Invocation and benediction prayers were offered by the pastors of Murise and Tsithrongse Baptist Churches.  

 

NDWM-Nagaland Region: The National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM)-Nagaland Region in collaboration with Assisi Centre for Integrated Development conducted a programme for migrants to commemorate the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Kacharigaon, Dimapur on June 26.


Sr Pramila Lobo UFS in her address expressed concerns on drug abuse and trafficking. She also shared on various kinds of addictions. She also shared about the elements of human trafficking, Action-Recruitment; Means-Threat; and Purpose- Exploitation. 


The programme concluded with distribution of dry ration to 33 members.
