Nagaland observes first ever National Voters’ Day

KOHIMA: Nagaland joined the rest of the country in celebrating the 1st ever National Voters’ Day celebration on January 25 at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner, Kohima.
Chief Electoral Officer Nagaland, J. Alam, IAS also the Home Commissioner Nagaland, who graced the significant day as the chief guest welcomed the new voters and said that young voters should exercise their right to vote and elect the best leaders, so that democracy can function in its true sense.
CEO calls for ‘great participation for stronger democracy’
Informing that around 7000 plus voters has registered during the current year in Nagaland, Alam expressed pride in welcoming them to be a part of the 740 million voters of India. Calling upon the people to understand the value of a voter’s power, the chief guest said that right to vote is a unique distinction that the constitution provides to the people. He quoted ‘poor people vote more than rich people, rural people vote more than urban people and older people vote more than younger people’, and said that the Election Commission of India has adopted the theme ‘Great Participation for Stronger Democracy’.
Deputy Chief Electoral Officer, Nagaland, Kohima, N. Moa Aier while highlighting on the profile of election in Nagaland informed that presently Nagaland has 12,99,227 voters enrolled in the e/roll, 3039 service voters, 60 A/Cs and 1790 polling stations. Nagaland has been conducting elections from 1964 till date and so far 11 elections has been held, he informed.
Highlights of the programme included presentation of EPICs/Badges/prizes to new voters and winners of SMS Slogan competition. District Election Officer and DC Kohima Bei-u Angami who chaired the function administered the National Voters’ Day pledge to the gathering. Assistant Election Officer, Kohima, Vekho Vero delivered the welcome speech while Electoral Registration Officer and ADC Kohima, Alun Hangsing proposed the vote of thanks.

DIMAPUR: Joining with the rest of the country and the State, Dimapur celebrated National Voters Day at Dc’s office Conference Hall on January 25. DC & District Election Officer Dimapur, Maongwati Aier chaired the programme.
DC in his short speech said that national Voters Day is also being celebrated as a concluding day commemorating Diamond Jubilee and the celebration is to felicitate the young voters who had attended 18 years of age to franchise their voting rights. Another important aspect of celebrating the day is to enhance the number of voters and to educate and create awareness about the electoral process of the country.
DC further said that during this celebration, the new voters are being issued EPIC card and badge pledging a slogan that I am ready to vote.
DC was optimistic that with the celebration of this National Voters Day national economy and its policy be reformed to a great extent. During the programme the members who had attended the function also read out the Voters Pledge.

MOKOKCHUNG: National Voters Day was observed in Mokokchung district with the rest of the country on January 25 by taking pledge to uphold the democratic traditions and dignity of free, fair and peaceful elections in the country.
The main function, which was held at Mokokchung town Hall, focused on measures to enhance participation of electorates in the democratic electoral process and to educate them to exercise their franchise in a free and fair manner in the process.
Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung also the District election Officer, Lithrongla G.Chishi who addressed the main function called upon the electorates to know their rights of participation in the electoral process saying their participation make difference in electing right person ‘to build the state’. Strongly opposing the system of’ proxy voting and selling of their precious votes’ Lithrongla Chishi cautioned the voters, especially those newly registered voters not to pressurized /influenced by consideration of race, community, language, religion or any inducement.
Assistant election Officer, Mokokchung, R. Mhathung in his address dwelt at length on the objectives and aims of the national Voters Day. He said there are 178441 voters in the district out of which 87080 are female voters. The function was chaired by Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mokokchung, R. Asenla Keitzar
Mock drill on polling in Electronic voting Machine was also conducted on the occasion where newly registered voters actively took part.

TUENSANG:
Tuensang also celebrated National Voters’ Day, on January 25 at Town Hall Tuensang. Deputy Commissioner & District Electoral Officer Tuensang Y.L.Jami IAS in his speech called upon the people to change the election system and to choose the right leader and transform Nagaland. Jami also apprised the gathering to be honest, strict and to take the right decision to choose their leaders. Earlier, welcome address was delivered by SDO (C) Tuensang, Thsupisie Bhogi while keynote address and vote of thanks was delivered by Assistant Election Officer Tuensang, Roland Marie and special number by L. Yangkumsangla. Political leaders, head of offices, NGOs, GBs & DBs and public, attended the programme.

PUGHOBOTO: Taking up the voters’ pledge, Pughoboto sub-division observed the 1st National Voters’ Day celebration 2011 at GPS Yepaqa polling station 9 on January 25.
ADC& DEO Pughoboto, Chumremo Odyuo gave the introduction and significance of National Voters’ Day. Speaking on the occasion, ADC said the main objective of the Election Commission of India is to increase the enrolment of voters and also to enhance the quality of Indian democracy. On behalf of the Election Officer, short speech was delivered by HA. The voters from different villages, party workers, head of offices and staff attended the celebration. The programme was chaired by SDO (C) & ERO, Pughoboto, Theoder Yanthan.

Empowering youths with a sense of citizenship

With the decision of the union cabinet to observe January 25, as National Voters Day, Nagaland state celebrated its National Voters day at DC conference hall. Speaking to this correspondent from the office of Election commission on the eve of the day, the officer disclosed that under the constitution of India, the launch of National Voters day is expected to give the youth a sense of citizenship, empowerment, pride and participation and also inspire them to exercise their franchise.
The officer also said large numbers of voters’ education activities were being taken up in various states, including wide multi-media campaigns to popularise electoral participation and in Nagaland the Election Commission has initiated ‘SMS slogan competition’.
Interestingly it is said that the office received more than 2000 SMS from the citizens where 20 finalists were picked and the first three winners will be awarded a cash of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and 2000 respectively while the rest of the finalist will be awarded a sum of Rs. 500 each. The officer said, list of the winners will be declared in local dailies and the awards handed during the formal function of National Voters Days celebration at DC conference hall.
He alleged that the commission had also launched a countrywide campaign to reach out to the newly eligible (18+) ele ctors and to register them in the revision of electoral rolls where the newly eligible voters and those who registered with Jan 1, 2011 as the qualifying date will be felicitated in over eight lakh polling station areas across the country Jan 25.
Conveying a message from the Office of Election commission to the Naga Citizens, the officer said Democracy is the best form of government and to uphold that, one has to exercise their own rights of franchise of voting personally and honestly, thereby contributing the Nation more stronger and to become a better place to live in, the officer added.
