Dimapur, November 9 (MExN): Joining the rest of the country, District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) under the aegis of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) observed National Legal Services Day across the state on Wednesday.  

According to a press release, the Mokokchung DLSA organized a programme to commemorate National Legal Services Day at the District Bar room with the panel lawyers and Para legal volunteers from Fazl Ali College Legal Cell, Mokokchung Law College, Ungma Village Legal Cell and front office PLVs and members from E-court and Bar Association. Bendangsenla, lady member, Legal Metrology & Consumer Redressal Forum was the resource person and spoke on Consumer Act.

The Wokha DLSA observed the day with Panel Lawyers and Para Legal Volunteers organising Legal Awareness programmes at Government High School Longsa Village, Community level, Longsa Village, Legal Literacy Club of Green Valley School, Government Higher Secondary School Wozhuro and for prisoners at the District Jail. 

Commemorating the day and in pursuance of the campaign ‘Empowerment of Citizens through legal awareness and outreach,’ the Phek DLSA led by Vethothi Vero, Retainer Lawyer, assisted by PLVs Dieze Vadeo and Nuveku Soho conducted a legal awareness campaign by explaining and distributing legal pamphlets on Lok Adalat and Consumer Protection Act 1986 to the public of Phek town, the release stated.

Phek DLSA also visited the Observation Home and had an interaction with staff from OH and JJB members where it was learnt that at present there are no children at Observation Home. Further, the JJB members suggested having a combined legal awareness programme on JJA and JJR with the Child Welfare Committee, CDPU and all sub-divisional police stations for better implementation and coordination of the Act and Rules.

Similarly, the Longleng DLSA observed the day at District Jail Longleng where a Legal Aid Clinic was inaugurated by Khrievono Seletsu, JMFC-cum-Secretary Longleng DLSA. Seletsu also delivered the keynote address on the significance of the day and Legal Aid Clinic. Inmates presented the special song and Assistant Jailor gave a short speech. The resource persons were A Mane Phom, Retainer Lawyer and M Chingmei panel lawyer. They spoke on Rights of the arrested person and Fundamental Duties respectively and the team also had interactions with the staff and inmates. 4 UTPs were presented at the LAC, the release stated.

A programme was organized by the Kohima DLSA at the District jail, Kohima and was attended by the DLSA Secretary Nokshe Kano, NJS, Sunjib Rana, Retainer Lawyer, PLs, PLVs and jail authority along with the inmates.

Meanwhile, Zunheboto DLSA visited Zunheboto Police Station and Women Police Station Zunheboto led by Julian Sitlhou, Secretary along with Easter Yepthomi, Retainer Lawyer and Inolito Sumi, Panel Lawyer in commemoration of the day. During the visit the secretary briefed on the law of arrest, benefits of Legal Services, and the rights of the arrested persons and how to avail legal aid at the stage of pre-arrest, arrest and remand stage. She asked the Police Officers and personnel to adhere to these laws for the deliverance of equal justice to all, the release stated.
