Kohima, March 29 (MExN): Christians across Nagaland observed Palm Sunday with solemn devotion and joy on Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week.
Churches in Kohima, Dimapur and other districts witnessed large congregations as worshippers gathered for special services and processions, holding palm leaves to commemorate the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
A highlight of the observance was the singing of ‘Hosanna’ hymns, with congregations joining in unison, creating a spiritually uplifting atmosphere within church premises and during processions.
Church leaders, in their sermons, called on believers to embrace humility, peace and sacrifice, reflecting on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.
In both urban and rural areas, the day was marked by prayers, fellowship and vibrant participation, with many attending in traditional attire. The observance sets the tone for Holy Week, leading to Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
In Jotsoma, worshippers took part in processions, blessings and the waving of palm branches. Rev Fr C Joseph, Counsellor of St Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama, described the day as “bittersweet” in his homily, noting it is both joyful and sorrowful. He urged the congregation to reflect on receiving the Saviour and offered prayers for Jerusalem amid ongoing conflict affecting traditional celebrations.
Meanwhile, in Ahthibung, KBC observed the day under the Christian Education Department, with children and youth participating in large numbers in a procession, chanting “Hosanna in the highest” and “Blessed is He that comes in the name of the Lord.” The department thanked the Board of Deacons and parents for the programme’s success.
