Nagaland observes World Veterinary Day

Kohima, April 30 (DIPR): Nagaland Veterinary Council observed World Veterinary Day on April 30 at Hotel Japfü, Kohima with the theme ‘Continuing education with a one health focus’.   Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer & Member, Project Operator Unit NEPED, Dr. V. Rutsa in his keynote address said that as a veterinarian “it is our responsibility to tackle the diverse issues of world poverty, hunger, disease and climate change.” He also said that a veterinarian needs to work conscientiously with dignity, keeping the principles of veterinary medical ethics and accept lifelong obligation for continual improvement of professional knowledge and competence.

World Veterinary Day this year, he informed, is celebrated with focus on one health as defined by the World Health Organisation. One health concept in the theme refers to the health of humans, animals and the environment as a whole since they are interconnected, he said.   Further, Dr. Rutsa stated that animals, both domesticated and wild, play a vital role in the wellbeing of the people and our planet. He stressed that animals are defenseless in human society and their protection makes veterinary profession the noblest of the noble professions of mankind and the society expects the veterinarians to keep the society free from zoonotic diseases and to continue their research on animals in order to serve the society more efficiently and effectively.   In the technical session, presentations were given by Dr. Keduzol Ltu, PhD (Virology) and Dr. Simon Ao, M.VSc (LPT). They spoke on the topic of dynamics of disease causation with one health, perspective of FSSAI, and role of state veterinary department.   Around 80 veterinary practitioners from across Nagaland participated in the program, which was presided over by President NSVC, Dr. K. David Sema.
