Chümoukedima emerges victorious in a footballing rollercoaster

The Nagaland Police Training School  ground resonated with a symphony of drumming, cheers, and gasps today as fans of Chümoukedima and Peren as well as neutral aficionados thronged to the arena to witness the NOPG 2024 football final.

The picturesque foothills of the Naga Hills served as a stage for a high-octane drama, witnessed by thousands of passionate spectators- ranging from school students and police in uniform to general crowd of various ages. 

Excitement vibrated in the air and it was palpable in the faces of every individual.

The final did not disappoint with a high scoring six-goal spectacle that kept fans on the edge of their seats or ground, in this case.  
The crowd erupted as Chümoukedima drew first blood, only to be silenced by Peren’s thunderous counterpunch, leaving the first half knotted at 1-1.

The second half was a heart-pounding rollercoaster.

Peren surged ahead early, sending their supporters into ecstasy, but Chümoukedima roared back, leveling the score and lighting up the home crowd.  

The excitement reached a crescendo when Chümoukedima scored another goal, making the score 3-2.

Peren, refusing to surrender, clawed their way back, forcing the match into extra time.

With a goalless extra time, the match was destined to be decided via a tie-breaker, a nerve-wracking climax that promised joy for one side and heartbreak for the other.

At the end, Chümoukedima prevailed 3-1 in the penalties, celebrating their golden moment and Peren had to settle for silver, but with their heads high and their valiant effort earning them silver. 

Ultimately, the real winner was football itself, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship and the unifying power of passion.

The match was graced by the Hekani Jakhalu, Advisor for Industries & Commerce, Government of Nagaland while medals were presented by Abu Metha, Secretary General of the Nagaland Olympic Association.

Earlier during the day, Phek defeated Dimapur 2-1 for the third place and won the bronze medal. 

The Nagaland Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024 (NOPG 2024) officially kicked off on February 12 and will conclude proceedings on February 17.
