Nagaland: ‘Our quality of music is exceptional’

In his engagement with Music students in Nagaland during his recent visit to the state, Timn Bennett-Hart, CEO of Rock School London (RSL) observed that the quality of music in Nagaland is “exceptional.”

Restating this observation, Theja Meru, Chairman of Task Force for Music & Arts (TaFMA) on Thursday underscored the scope for music in the state not only for enjoyment but also for employment opportunities. Addressing the opening of North Music Academy located in the Secretariat Road in Kohima, he also highlighted that there are over 100 Music Schools in Nagaland. “This is a positive and a growing trend”, he asserted.

He divulged that Rock School London engages with about 60 countries around the world. Further quoting Arup Gohain - RSL Country Manager and Director, he said that 25 states in India are under the Board wherein the best music schools are also under the East Zone that includes Nagaland. 

“In all the 25 states of India, majority or almost all the schools, you will see a music teacher from Nagaland”, he quoted him as saying. With the mushrooming of music schools and the need for music education, he asserted that, “when we say quality education, it means quality teachers.” 

He congratulated Neilakuonuo Metha, the proprietor on the new venture while describing her as an influencer, a wonderful singer and somebody who is fruitful in her engagement with people. He exuded hope that through her life she would bless many more young people.

Meru stated that this is a wonderful time for Nagaland and urged musicians to further leave the borders of Nagaland while expressing that, “this is something that is going to bloom into something very big.”

“Think out of the box, think out of the state, think out of North East India, there is room for everyone”, he added. 

Reiterating that there are wonderful opportunities ahead of musicians, he also exuded hope that the North Music Academy will be the north star of music for Nagaland, and will always consistent to guide young people with that light to the right path of enjoyment of music and employment opportunities. 

Neilakuonuo Metha, Proprietor of North Music Academy shared that her family has always loved the idea of music and expressed her profound gratitude to her family for the support to make this far-fetched dream a reality. 

“I hope that this Academy will not just be a music institution but a home for everyone”, she expressed. 

Highlights of the event included bible reading and prayer by Zakiebeituo Metha, Pastor, Immanuel Baptist Church, Kohima, special song by Nounengu Whuorie, prayer for refreshments by Medo-u Chadi, Associate Pastor, Baptist Church Chiechama while Thejasilie Metha, Pastor, TUBC Tseminyu chaired the programme.
