Kohima, August 1 (MExN): The Para Volleyball Federation of India (PVFI) has launched the Nagaland Paravolley Association (NPVA) to promote para sports and create opportunities for differently-abled athletes in the state.
The association was formally launched during an awareness symposium held in Kohima on July 31 as part of PVFI's national grassroots expansion programme aimed at developing para-athletes for national and international competitions, including the upcoming World Championship in China.
The programme was attended by the Secretary of the Department of Youth Resources and Sports as the chief guest, along with senior government officials, reflecting support for the Khelo India and Sugamya Bharat initiatives.
The event was chaired by NPVA General Secretary-designate Carrey YA Konyak, who said the state was ready to embrace inclusive high-performance sports.
PVFI National Executive Member and NPVA President-designate Hachamo Patton said the association seeks to provide differently-abled youth with opportunities to compete at the highest level through structured training and competition.
He said the initiative aims to transform perceptions of persons with disabilities by promoting excellence in sport and enabling talented athletes from Nagaland to compete nationally and internationally.
Shreyaman Bhargava, Primary Consultant to the PVFI, presented the technical aspects of Para Sitting Volleyball, explaining the international medical classification system for athletes and outlining the federation's plan to establish structured para-volleyball ecosystems in 453 districts across 22 states.
A highlight of the programme was the unveiling of the official logo of the Nagaland Paravolley Association by the special guests.
During an open forum, representatives of the Department of Social Welfare, the Department of Youth Resources and Sports and the Nagaland Olympic Organisation pledged support for the newly formed association.
The discussions focused on providing infrastructure, equipment support and access to sports facilities to enable athletes, including those from remote districts, to participate in the sport.
NPVA Vice-President-designate Kethose Chuzho proposed the vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the state government and the Para Volleyball Federation of India for supporting the initiative.
With the establishment of the NPVA, the state aims to identify, train and field a competitive team for the next National Para Sitting Volleyball Championship, with the long-term goal of producing athletes capable of representing India at the international level.
