Nagaland participates in Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress

Dimapur, July 1 (MExN): The first-ever Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress was held in Beijing from June 25 to 27 where over 1,200 representatives discussed nature-based solutions in attaining sustainable development.  

The three-day Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress, organised by multilateral development group the International Bamboo and Rattan Organisation (INBAR) and China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA), was the first international, policy-focused conference on the use of bamboo and rattan to help sustainable development.  

In more than 70 panel discussions, representatives focused on how bamboo and rattan can help tackle poverty, mitigate climate change, restore land, and create sustainable housing.  

NBDA Team Member M. Kichung Phom in a press release informed that a four-member team from Nagaland, as part of the Indian delegates also participated in the event. The team was led by Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) Chairman, Visasolie Lhounghu and Principal Secretary, APC and Mission Director T. Imkonglemba Ao, IAS along with Team Leader and Member NBDA.  

T. Imkonglemba chaired one of the parallel sessions which focused on the role of bamboo in economic development in India. In another session, which focused on bamboo plants’ unique contribution to climate change on North East India perspective, papers were presented by Ram Muivah IAS NEC Secretary, T. Imkonglemba and Peter Lichamo.  

The team from Nagaland also met Dr. Hans Friederich, Director General, INBAR and visited the largest bamboo nursery and tissue culture lab in China followed by in depth interaction and discussion with Prof. Tan Hongchao from Yunnan Normal University and Kamesh Salam President South Asian Bamboo Foundation for future collaboration.
