
Dimapur, October 12 (MExN): The Ministry of Environment & Forests and the Energy and Resources Institute, New Delhi, organized side event in COP-11 (Conference of Parties) “International Architecture of REDD+ and its relevance to developing countries in Biodiversity meet at Hyderabad International Convention Centre, Hyderabad on October 11.
A press release received here stated that from Nagaland, M. Lokeswara Rao APCCF (Environment and Climate Change) and Nodal officer REDD Plus participated in the CoP 11 side event. In Nagaland, PKR villages community forest site in Tseminyu of Kohima district is selected for REDD plus project. TERI is collaborating with Nagaland Forest Department to standardize the methodologies so that this methodology can be applied to other sites in the State in future.
Journey of REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) was started in 2005 during the negotiations on climate change with RED as compensation for reducing deforestation and traveled till 2012 at COP-17 held at Durban and left number of unresolved issues such as definition of degradation, deforestation and sustainable management of forests. REDD+ is reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and also enhancing carbon through sustainable forest management along with maintenance of ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation. It is big question before developing countries that incentives of carbon through REDD+ will be sufficient to attract community for implementing sustainable management of forests. Many developing countries in Africa, East Asia and South Asia are preparing themselves for implementing REDD+ Projects.
“In India, REDD cell established at National level which is guiding and apprising state forest departments and community through workshops and seminars. We have also conducted national level multi stakeholder and community level consultation REDD readiness and published five documents on forest governance, livelihood dependence, methodology for carbon assessment, international architecture of REDD+ and biodiversity conservation. TERI is in process to prepare REDD+ projects on six pilots in Uttar Pradesh, Uttara khand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Nagaland,” said ADGF Bansal From Ministry of Environment and forests
Later on there was panel discussion representatives from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal have participated.
