The Nagaland Police Headquarters is reported to have recalled 20 personnel for alleged involvement in the elections to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly. The recall was based on complaint received by the police headquarters that its personnel were actively participating in electioneering activities defying standing instruction to the contrary.

The directive to recall was issued by the ADGP (Law & Order) with the approval of the DGP, Nagaland, on February 23.

According to the directive, the 20 personnel belonged to different units of the Nagaland Police. In no particular order, 3 were from the Dimapur Police Commissionerate, 1 from the Police Central Workshop, 3 from the Central Store, 3 from DEF Kohima, 1 from the DEF Longleng, 1 from the NAPTC, 3 from the 1st NAP, 2 from the 2nd NAP, 1 from the 3rd NAP and 1 each from the 9th and 12th  NAP (IR). They included 2 ABSIs, 5 havildars, 3 Naiks and 10 Constables.

It directed the unit commanders to order the recall of the personnel (names withheld) to their respective unit headquarters by February 24. Failure to report as directed, the personnel were to be placed under suspension.

While the directive did not specify whether the personnel were on leave or on duty, it directed those who were on “medical leave to report to the Unit Headquarters along with medical records.” It further directed against the deployment of the 20 personnel on election related duties.

The Nagaland DGP did not respond to request for comment.

Meanwhile, other sources claimed that the 20 personnel hailed from one particular constituency in Mokokchung district and were assigned to law and order duty in the same constituency. This aspect could not be officially corroborated however.
