Nagaland Police appeal caution while circulating info on social media

Kohima, June 7 (MExN): The Nagaland Police has appealed to the public, and advised it, to exercise caution while circulating information on social media.

“All social media users should exercise extreme caution while sharing any such information with friends or public,” stated the PRO, Police Headquarters, Kohima, in a press release issued today.

The Police stated that a large number of fake news items and rumours have recently been floating on social media platforms like Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter etc.

Noting that such rumours have created “false alarm” in society, and have the ability to “take an ugly turn by causing conflict among various sections of the public,” the Nagaland Police remained concerned that fake news can “spiral out of control, causing huge damage to the life and property.” “The speed of transmission of information or data or rumors on social media is so fast that damage control, at times becomes almost impossible.” Besides, such rumours have “an element of criminality” that is “associated with people originating such information or also sharing such information.”

Thus, the Police suggested, “If anyone feels that any information is a rumour or is likely to cause embarrassment or disaffection to any person or community or a section of the society, it may be better to first get such information checked or authenticated from official channels or sources.”

To confirm any social media news before circulating it for public awareness, one can first check with the Nagaland Police on: Facebook account: D G P Nagaland Facebook page: DGP Nagaland Twitter: DGP_Nagaland Whatsapp: 8258829982
