Nagaland Director General of Police, K Kire, today said the state police was fully geared to handle law and order problems and ready to lead from the front if situations so demanded. Addressing a press briefing here in the office chamber of the Dimapur Superintendent of Police, Kire said the ministry of Home Affairs had been kind enough to sanction a number of NAP (IR) battalions for Nagaland and that the IRB personnel, along with other state police forces, were well-trained and equipped to handle any law and order problem.
The police chief was replying to a query on the recent statement of Union Home minister P Chidambaram that in Jammu and Kashmir, it would now be the police and not the army or other paramilitary forces that would be on the forefront to maintain law and order. “What the Union Home minister is right. Law and order is in the hands of police and, therefore, police will have to take the lead,” Kire told mediapersons.
On reports of other northeast insurgent groups taking shelter in Dimapur, he admitted that the topography of Dimapur makes it easy for militants from other states, especially Assam, to sneak into the state’s commercial hub. Falling short of blaming the Assam government, Kire hinted that the problem was compounded by the fact that Assam does not have sufficient police personnel in areas bordering Nagaland.
He however assured that Nagaland police was on full alert and gave credit to Dimapur police for making a number of arrests till date.
The DGP who earlier in the afternoon held a meeting with officers of various branches of the State police posted in Dimapur as part of his second phase state-wide tour to study firsthand the problems and grievances of police personnel, said one of his priorities was maintenance of strict discipline in the force. “Every one of us starting from the constable has to contribute to lift the department (Police) to a higher level. I tell my boys to respect their uniform and perform their duties with a sense of pride,” Kire said. The DGP was accompanied by IG (Range) NN Ngullie and IG (NAP) SN Achumi.
