Nagaland Power Dept running at loss

•    Department cautions against nonpayment of bill   

•    Around 1000 crore deposited to central government quarterly on power purchase

•    Good amount of power lost in leakage

•    Kiphire is the “nerve centre” of Power department

Minister of Power, C. Kipili Sangtam today inaugurated and upgraded the SDO Electrical to Executive Engineer in presence of the department heads, civil societies, public leaders and the citizens.  

Speaking at the inauguration function Minister Power sternly cautioned that “the department will not hesitate to take legal action to those who fail to pay the revenue after consumption the power.” Disclosed that the state is depositing around 1000 crore to the central government quarterly on power purchase, the Minister asked the citizens to “make use of electricity judiciously as good amount of power is lost in leakage which is the loss of economy.”  

Highlighting the activities of the department the minister said that in the last three years the department is doing an enormous job for the welfare of the people. He also said that the up gradation of department from SDO to EE power is the long felt dream of the people of the district which has become a reality today.  

Er Khose Sale Superintending Engineer (D&R) O/O Chief Engineer Power who spoke on behalf of the department said Kiphire is the “nerve centre” of the Power department in the state as the district has lot of potential on power sector. He added that the district is connected with 132 KV line which makes the district more important.  

He also disclosed that of the 90 villages in the district with around 1400 rural household more than 9000 household is being electrified and assure in the next 2 years all the villages and rural household will be electrified.  

Stating the department is at loss Er Khose Sale said, even in Kiphire district the expected revenue is around 3 crores but the department is receiving only 1 crore which is a huge loss for the department. He asked the gathering to discourage power theft and also power conservation.  

Deputy Commissioner Kiphire A. Chumremo Odyuo who also spoke on the occasion asked the gathering to take care of the government property as personal property as it is for the welfare of the people in the district. He also appealed to the leaders to check into land encroachment as there is no land left for government department to go for new construction and even the government quarters is also “vanishing.”
