DIMAPUR, APRIL 19 (MExN): The Nagaland Press Association (NPA) has condemned the attack carried out by two unidentified persons, by hurling a petrol bomb, at the residence of the editor of The Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim in Shillong on April 17 evening.
Going by the way the attack was carried out, undercover, the sole intention appears to be to try and create fear on the men and women who serve in the Fourth Estate, the Association stated on Thursday.
A condemnation note from the NPA termed such attack in recent times against journalists in India as an attempt to silence the voice of those who speak for the truth, espousing the cause of democracy and a free society that believes in peace and dialogue. Attacks on journalists are also a reflection of growing intolerance in the country, it added.
The Association asserted that Patricia Mukhim is not only an editor of a newspaper published out of Shillong, Meghalaya, but she is a senior journalist representing the country who has been actively engaging on issues of national importance.
Considering the attack as outright disrespect for the democratic values of peace and dialogue that the Fourth Estate represents, whether it is in Meghalaya, Delhi or Nagaland, the NPA has urged the Meghalaya Government under the leadership of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to bring the culprits to book.
