Kiphire, February 4 (MExN): The Pungro Area College Students’ Union (PACSU) on Saturday rescued a rare species of Owl from poacher at Pungro town and released at Fakim Wildlife Sanctuary in the presence of Wildlife Division Kiphire.
PACSU President Tokiu Yimchunger informed in a press release that the bird was caught by a villager in the vicinity of Tsudowong village on February 2 which was later brought to Pungro. Having received the information to the Officials of PACSU, the official swiftly intervened and seized from the possession.
This rare species is said to be Eastern Grass Owl, usually found in south East Asia and enlisted in the IUCN Red List of threatened species 2016, and protected under the India Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.
PACSU has been imparting the denizens on conservation and preservation of its rich biodiversity, besides redressing the needs of students’ grievances. Pungro sub-division, being one of the biodiversity hotspots in North East India, the Union has been promoting the importance of flora and fauna whereby, checks illicit exploitation.
In this regard the Union reminded all the federating units to remain vigilant and to enforce blanket ban on poaching within their respective jurisdiction as per the Union’s resolution.
