DIMAPUR, MARCH 26 (MExN): Nagaland has registered its first cyber offence. Based on an FIR lodged by a Naga girl (name withheld by the police) one Shashwat Kumar (24 years), s/o Dr. Shiva Jatan Thakur was arrested by a team of Dimapur police from the Netaji Subash Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata on March 25 for circulating indecent pictures (semi nude) of a girl over the popular internet networking site ‘Facebook’. The arresting team, led by the OC of the East Police Station, Dimapur Atu Zumvu, brought Kumar to Dimapur on March 26.

According to the police the pictures, numbering five in various semi-nude postures, was circulated on the networking site around 2009 after Kumar reportedly hacked into the e-mail account of the complainant. “During the preliminary investigation, accused Shashwat Kumar voluntarily admitted before the investigating agency to have illegally hacked into the e-mail of the victim and through her facebook account has transmitted her nude pictures to all her family and friends circle as she refused to marry him,” stated an official version of the police released to the media from the Additional Superintendent of Police, Dimapur.
The girl, who lodged the complaint, and under arrest Kumar were reportedly in a mutual relationship prior to the pictures were illegally made public. Kumar is originally of Patna, Bihar and is from a well to do family. According to the press note from the Additional SP, Kumar is a “Cadet of Merchant Navy”. Information regarding when and where the pictures were taken was kept confidential by the police, to protect the identity of the girl, said to be around 20 years of age.
A laptop in the possession of Kumar, which was used for circulating the pictures, was also seized by the arresting team. “The seized laptop will be sent to the Experts for examination and obtaining experts opinion. Besides these, there are also other material evidences such as, voice recording which was recorded through mobile phone and later got it re-corded under proper format i.e. WAV 8KHz 16 bit by the Experts of Cyber Forensics section RIELIT (Regional Institute of e-Learning and Information Technology) Kohima prior to the arrest,” the release from the Additional SP stated.
“The other evidences such, nude pictures of the victim and the messages which was transmitted by the accused from the seized Laptop which is with the police will be cross-examined with the reports of the experts. The accused will be produced before the Hon’ble Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Dimapur on 27/02/2011 and will be remanded into police custody to ascertain all the facts and circumstances of the Cyber Crime committed by the alleged accused.”
