Kohima, July 15 (MExN): Director of School Education, Nagaland Wonthungo Tsopoe inaugurated the observance of Jal Shakti Abhiyan under the Department of School Education by undertaking tree plantation drive at the directorate on July 15.
A press release issued by the department stated that during the programme, Tsopoe briefed the officers of the directorate about Jal Shakti Abhiyan, which is an initiative of Government of India, focused on water conservation. He also distributed stickers explaining ways of water conservation to all staffs and visitors in the directorate. Similar programmes were held at all the District Education Offices and Sub Divisional Education Offices across the State on the same day.
The Jal Shakti Abhiyan campaign commenced country wide on July 1, 2019 and will be observed in two phases till November 30, 2019 in order to address the water situation in the country. As a part of the campaign, senior officers from various Ministries of Government of India have been deputed as part of special teams to identified water stressed blocks and districts to work with local officials to redress the water scarcity situation in five specific intervention areas: water conservation and rainwater harvesting, renovation of traditional and other water bodies/tanks, reuse bore well recharge structures, watershed development and intensive afforestation.
The campaign also involves mobilizing local people’s participation to make the Jal Shakti Abhiyan a true “Jan Andolan”. In this regard, the Department of School Education has initiated steps to enrich the programme by the participation of school students who would act as awareness ambassadors. All students from class VI onwards will be involved in mass awareness creation activities and community education activities such as rallies, nukkad nataks, plantation drives, workshops, seminars etc.
Though students from most of Indian States joined the campaign on July 15, students from Nagaland will take part in the programme from July 17 to August 9 as the schools will be on summer vacation till July 16.
