Nagaland sees 32% decline in forest fires

Nagaland witnessed a significant decline in forest fire incidents, with detections dropping by 1,273 cases during 2023-24.

Nagaland has witnessed a significant decline in forest fire incidents, with detections dropping by 1,273 cases, equivalent to a 32.79% decrease, during 2023-24 compared to the previous year. This data was highlighted in the Nagaland Economic Survey 2024-25, published by the Department of Economics & Statistics, Government of Nagaland, based on findings from the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023.

Phek district recorded the most notable improvement, with forest fire detections falling by 56.70%, followed by Kohima at 54.73% and Peren at 41.53%. Despite the overall decline, Mon district reported the highest number of forest fire detections at 442 cases during 2023-24, while Longleng district recorded the fewest, with 115 cases.

The forest fire detections were carried out by the Forest Survey of India using data from the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) satellite, equipped with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensors.
