Kohima, May 4 (MExN): The Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya today reminded that the Street Vendors Act, which aims at providing social security and livelihood rights to street vendors, should be implemented in Nagaland at the earliest.
In a press statement issued by his PRO, the Governor observed that street vending is a source of livelihood for people, especially women, who come from rural areas carrying their vegetables and other products in towns to sell. He felt they should be provided proper shed or kiosk along with drinking water and toilet facilities.
Meanwhile, Acharya called on the vendors to be aware about the various provisions of the Street Vendors Act and be vigilant and proactive in getting the law implemented.
“This will not only benefit the vendors but will also (ensure) an affordable, healthy as well as convenient service to the majority of the population,” he maintained.
The Governor also noted that vegetable vendors sometimes are forced to sell their vegetables at distress price to avoid the trouble of carrying back perishable vegetables to their villages and bring it back the next day again.
If the Government provides them with individual kiosk in daily or monthly rent or provides refrigerated storage at a minimal cost, it will be of great help and relief to the vendors, he added.
The statement mentioned that the Governor had written to the Chief Minister on March 14, 2018 with regard to providing kiosks for women vegetable vendors for clean and secure business.
