KOHIMA: The State government had reportedly spent Rs. 218.41 crore on school, college and technical education out of a total State’s budget of Rs. 2060.4 crore during 2002-2003.
This work out to be 10.6 per cent of the total budget outlay, according to available source.
Out of this amount, Rs. 191.48 crore was spend on school education and Rs. 26.95 crore on higher and technical education.
In school sector, the biggest component of the expenditure was on salaries. Similar is the position in the sectors of higher and technical education.
Over the year, though the allocation and expenditure on education has shown a steady increase in the percentage of allocation to the total outlay (without taking into account the salaries component), the outlay for school education has shown a decline while that for higher and technical education the percentage of outlay has remained stagnant.
This limited outlay for education has meant a constraint on the functioning of the department, according to the latest report of the State Human Resource Development.
