DIMAPUR, FEBRUARY 4 (MExN): In the aftermath of the stiff opposition to holding of elections to the Urban Local Bodies with 33% reservation of seats for women by tribal hohos in Nagaland, the Nagaland State Cabinet has decided to take the matter to the New Delhi to demand that Nagaland be exempted from the purview of Part IX of the Constitution of India.
According to a communiqué issued by the media cell, Chief Minister’s Office, the State Cabinet, while taking serious consideration of the widespread concern expressed by various tribal hohos and other organizations with regard to certain provisions of Part IX-A of the Constitution relating to municipalities, has decided to submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister to amend the Constitution through ordinance.
This new turn of event was decided in an emergency Cabinet meeting Saturday tonight attended by special invitees comprising of legislators from all tribes of the State, the CMO informed.
All the sixty legislators of the State, both the Members of Parliament, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland are to submit the memorandum jointly and an early appointment with the Prime Minister has been sought, it stated.
