Dignitaries and others during awareness programme on child rights held at City Centre, Medziphema on March 12.

Medziphema, March 12 (MExN): The Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR) organised a one day awareness programme on Child Rights at City Centre, Medziphema, Chümoukedima on March 12.
The programme was attended by District Administration, District Child Protection Department, Tribal Hohos, Women Hohos, Ward/Village Councils, students leaders, schools, churches etc.
Alun Hangsing, Chairman, NSCPCR highlighted that children are the backbone of the society and stated that to achieve a vibrant future it all lies in the hands of our children and we as elders or parents should guide them and it is not only the Government who is working for children but every individual are stakeholders when it comes to Child Rights or Child Protection. To have a bright future we need to create a conducive environment and the Commission also plans to conduct more awareness programmes on Child Rights throughout the state.
Hangsing also stated that to stop child abuse, early intervention is required and discouraged people to compromise cases amongst themselves as we don’t get the desired result of punishing the offender.
Short Speech was delivered by P James Swu, ADC, Medziphema, Chümoukedima, stated, “We want our children to excel but we are not giving the good environment and that we need to make a good space for our children to live in.” He thereby encouraged all the participants to be the ears and eyes of the Commission and immediately report to them if they witness any illegal activities with regard to children happening around us.
Aying Wangsa Member, NSCPCR spoke on the topic Rights of Children with regard to Education Vis-à-vis Right to Education, she stressed that a child should not be denied admission just because he/ she do not have Birth Certificate and she added that the RTE Act, restrict the government teachers to take private tuitions.
Lichani Murry, Legal Consultant, NSCPCR, spoke on overview on the JJ Act. She highlighted the provisions and safeguard on Child Rights and also providing protection of children under JJ Act.
Murry, stressed that the Child Protection implies the interdisciplinary/multi-sectoral measures under taken to guarantee the survival and acceptable development of children with respect to their rights.
Akumla Longchari, Member, NSCPCR, spoke on “Understanding the POCSO Act and Its implementation.” She impressed upon the crowd that Stopping Child Sexual abuse is essential. However, it is not only the responsibility of the Government to keep children safe and secure but it is also the responsibility of all of us to ensure a safe and protected environment for our children to enable them to live with dignity and free from any form of violence, Longchari added.
She also that the POCSO Act mostly talk about the punishment and the offence after the crime is being committed but we have to think about how it can be prevented, there the parents play a very important role in educating the children as they are their first guide and teacher.
The programme was chaired by Mhaseto Rhakho, Project Coordinator, Child HelpLine, Chümoukedima and vote of thanks was delivered by Nikito Zhimomi, DCPO, Chümoukedima.
