Nagaland: State has highest unemployed youth in India

Zunheboto, February 22 (MExN): Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Zunheboto conducted District Youth Convention for the youth at SKK, Hall, Zunheboto on February 20.


James Renbi Kikon, EAC Zunheboto was the special guest of the function. Kikon, while addressing the convention cited the dream of Pandit Jawarlal Nehru in building India to a superb power country through the trusted hands of the youth. “But his dream turned out to be far from reality,” the EAC said, while adding that in India, 60 million youth are unemployed which is 23.70 percent in 2018.


Nagaland has 25.5 percent of unemployed youth which is the highest in India, whereas Meghalaya, which has a similar population with Nagaland has only 1.5 percent of youth force unemployed, said Kikon.


He added that in Nagaland, every year 4000 to 5000 educated youth are added to unemployment scenario, where nearly 75% of Nagaland economy is controlled by outsiders.


He regretted that the Nagas always opt for government jobs, which is scarce. The EAC also noted how the Nagas consume a lot of meat which is mostly imported from outside the state, and suggested that the youth can join the green pasture in meat production sector.


He made a clarion call to the youth to make use of their land for productivity and income generating activities.
John Makhabo, DYC i/c NYK Zunheboto highlighted the various programmes and activities of NYK. He said that the NYK has direct link to grassroots level, rural youth clubs which are assets of the government of India.


Reiterating that the government need active participation of rural youth clubs as stakeholders to development, he called upon the rural youth clubs to play pro-active role in building the nation through their cohesive efforts.


He exhorted them to avail government free skill training and become a professional, adding that these days, professional people are sought for and professional touch is the best resort to any venture.


Sport materials were distributed to the youth clubs who placed their applications for it. The application came from various blocks of Zunheboto.
