Sepak takraw and martial arts takes bulk of the awards

KOHIMA, MARCH 17 (MExN): The 2022 State Sports Awards handed away on March 17 was dominated by sepak Takraw and martial arts, including wrestling. Out of the total 98 cash awards given to state athletes, sepak Takraw had the highest number of awardees at 37, followed by Karate- 14, Taekwondo- 15, Muaythai- 6 and Wrestling- 1. Archery and tennis got two each, athtletics (shot put) got one and football got 20. 

The awards went to sportspersons/athletes who won medals in recognized sports disciplines at international, national and northeast levels during 2019-20. 

The awards were given away by Wezope Kenye, Secretary, Youth Resources & Sports (Y&RS), at a function held on March 17, in Kohima, informed the DIPR in a press release. The release quoted Kenye as terming the awards “a special way” to encourage performance and inculcating competitive spirit. 

The awards in sepak Takraw went to those, who won medals at 23rd Junior National sepak takraw Championship 2019 and the 30th National sepak taktraw Championship, 2020. 

The awards in Karate were for the medal winners at the 5th International Karate Championship, 15th All India Independence Cup International Karate championship and 6th ISKF National Open Karate Championship.  

The awards in Taekwondo and Muaythai were for the medal winners at the 3rd Kukkiwon Cup International Taekwondo Championship and UAMAI, National Muaythai Youth Championship, 2019, respectively. 

The awards in archery were for the medals won at XVIII World Police and Fire Games held at Chengdu, China in 2019. 

The awards in tennis, wrestling and shotput were for the medals won in the 4th North East Open Tennis Tournament, National Level Rural Sports Competition Wrestling and the North East Olympic Games, respectively.

The awards in football were for the state team that won bronze at the 10th North East Dr T Ao Football Championship.
The cash prizes ranged from Rs 5000 to Rs 21,000 relative to the level of the competitive events.

Five coaches (volleyball, hockey, sepak takraw, taekwondo and boxing) were also in the list awardees, who received Rs 1 lakh each.
