Dimapur | November 23
Against the backdrop of the civil society organizations (CSOs) of Peren district imposing strictures on movement of timber products, timber traders and tree farmers in Nagaland under the aegis of Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) in a joint meeting on Tuesday passed three resolutions.
In the first resolution, the house resolved to ban transportation of timbers from Peren district to Dimapur district till the issue was settled.
The decision was taken during a joint meeting of the Chümoukedima Timber Traders’ Association (CTTA), Dimapur District Timber Mill Owners’ Association (DDTMOA) and NTTU held in Dimapur on November 23.
The house also decided to take legal course of action in order to recover the amount invested in the construction of roads and other facilities if the issue was not resolved within a specified period. In this regard, the house called upon the concerned members to submit their respective expenditure reports on or before November 27.
Meanwhile, the house further decided to stop timber operation from Peren district during the current season if the issue was not resolved on or before December 10.
It may be mentioned that the timber traders have opposed to the recent decision of the CSOs of Peren district as the latter decided to stop “rampant deforestation and exploitation of natural resources” in Peren district. The CSOs had unanimously resolved a total prohibition on the passage of round timber from the district except the sawn timber with immediate effect from the current season and entrusted student organisations of the district to impose the decision and warned that defaulters would be penalised.
