Nagaland to host Asian Belt Wrestling Championships

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today said that Nagaland has been given chance to host Asian Belt Wrestling Championships in November this year.

He said that Belt Wrestling Federation of India wanted Nagaland to host this meet as it is turn for India to host the same this year.
Addressing the 52nd Angami Sports Association (ASA) Wrestling Meet 2024 at Kohima as the chief guest, Rio said that Naga wrestling is an indigenous sport, which is the biggest sports crowd puller activity in the state. He acknowledged all the concerned organizations for striving hard to popularise Naga wrestling. He also called for active involvement in free style and belt wrestling event.

Rio called upon the Nagaland Wrestling Association and its units- Angami Sports Association, Chakhesang Wrestling Association and Zeliang Wrestling Association to broaden their minds in taking up Naga wrestling to other parts of Nagaland to widen the scope of the game.

Rio also called for formation of Wrestling Associations at the district level across the state and not just confined to tribes. This, he said, would go a long way in popularizing and widening the horizon of Naga wrestling. He continued that Naga wrestling need to be expanded, to ensure that it cover all the districts and hoped that Nagas will be united through it.

Further, Rio also stressed on the need to encourage women wrestlers by strengthening free style and belt wrestling in the state.
