Nagaland tourism & Climate Change

Dimapur, September 11 (MExN): The palpable effects of the impact of the biggest ecological threat to the world, Climatic Change, were the centre of discussions during a recent workshop by an NGO. The affect of Climate Change on Nagaland’s eco-system, local culture, and fluctuations in the economic trends was discussed during a workshop with GTZ consultants from Germany and NEPED.

The theme of the discussions centered on the topic of ‘adapting’ to Climate Change in the North East. The workshop was held on September 10 at the NEPED conference hall, attended by Nagaland Tourism Association and several other NGOs.

President of Nagaland Tourism Association Neisatuo Keditsu expressed gratitude to the organizers for involving the NGOs in this ‘ground-breaking’ endeavor to ‘help’ Nagaland in adapting to the Climate Change, a global threat ‘being felt here in Nagaland today.’

He talked of the status of Nagaland contributing to this global phenomenon and the impacts that are being felt locally. He stressed on the role and contribution of the tourism industry in coping with climate changes through eco-tourism and responsible ‘tourism ethics.’ This role he said can be in the form of reaching out to the entire state through the tourism network to create more awareness starting from the grass root. The help of audio-visual aids and giving more importance in using the local dialects may be used to sensitize the various Naga tribes in the rural areas, Keditsu said.

The evidence of the impact of climatic changes being felt in the eco-system, local culture, and fluctuations in the economic trends, political and social condition was also discussed in the workshop.

Appreciating the initiative undertaken by NEPED, he assured that Nagaland Tourism Association will extend its support in identifying the vulnerable areas, formulate remedial measures, and incorporate awareness campaigns on Climate Change in the association’s activities in the days to come.
