With the premier Hornbill Festival round the corner, the Nagaland Tourist Police (NTP) on Monday issued a number of security tips and guidelines for both domestic and foreign travelling to the state.

While most tips are regular and be considered part of any safety guidelines, there are some which visiting tourists can take into consideration.

Among others, the ‘security tips for Tourist’ shared by NTP on its official Twitter handle advised the visitors to not visit isolated places without a proper guide or hire taxis without number plates.

“Sit behind the driver so that you can see him but he cannot see you from the rear glass,” it said.  The police also asked the tourists to pay the driver only after reaching the destination and pay “while you are sitting in the car.”

The police further asked the tourists to not deal with middlemen and touts for any service. For foreign tourists, the police informed that they can enter Nagaland freely without any permits but they “need to register with the Foreigner’s Registration Officer (FRO) of the districts they visit or the nearest police station within 24 hours of arrival.”

“Keep passport, credit cards, driving license and other valuable documents in separate handbags and deposit it in the hotel’s safe,” the police said in the tweet.

Domestic tourists need to obtain Inner Line Permit from Deputy Residential Commissioner in New Delhi, Kolkata or Guwahati. ILP can also be obtained from Deputy Commissioner office in Dimapur, Kohima or Mokokchung.

Business visitors were also urged to remove their name tags in public and remove them while leaving conference or hotel.

The tourists were also cautioned against ‘staged accidents.’

“They might be meant to just catch you off-guard,” it added.  The police further asked the tourists to maintain cleanliness and hygiene, especially in ecologically sensitive areas.

“Respect local culture and traditions,” the police said. The police further said that domestic tourists need to obtain the Inner Line Permit (ILP). The ILP can be obtained from the Deputy Residential Commissioner (DRC), Nagaland House posted in New Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati.
