Dimapur, July 24 (MExN): Principal Secretary for Urban Development Department & Municipal Affairs, I Himato Zhimomi, has urged Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in Nagaland to work towards zero waste policy, stating that it is ‘a possible dream if one is determine to a healthier and cleaner environment despite the complications one faces.’
Zhimomi said this while addressing a workshop/orientation programme on ‘Transition to Alternative use of Single Use Plastic in line with implementation of Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021,’ in Kohima on July 22. The event was organised by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) for all the ULBS in Nagaland, a press release informed.
Taking the example of Kohima, he also spoke on the menace of solid waste which is increasing everyday and also affecting the environment and causing climate change with the rise in temperature, the release stated.
Delivering the welcome and keynote address, NPCB Member Secretary K Hukato Chishi spoke about the role of NPCB as a statutory body. On receiving directions from the MoEF&CC, CPCB or NGT, the same is notified to the ULBs, district administrators and municipal councils to make certain that they are following the directions in terms of wastes like plastics, solid wastes etc.
The release stated that during technical sessions, topics including ‘Transition to Alternatives to Single Use Plastics;’ ‘Brief overview of Plastic Waste Management (Second Amendment) Rules, 2022;’ ‘Plastic recycling & opportunities for effective utilization of plastic wastes;’ ‘Demonstration on CPCB Monitoring Module for Compliance of SUP & SUP Public Grievance Redressal APP;’ and ‘Rulings of NGT Order on Solid Waste Management,’ were covered.
The resource persons were Er Aghali A Swu, Environmental Engineer; Sentinaro Angami, Senior Scientific Assistant;Akangmeren Imchen, Scientist B; and Yanathung Kithan, Scientist B from NPCB.
Pelenuo, founder of Züb Züb, a cleaning service, shared her experience on how she started her movement in cleaning parts of Kohima and slowly started to clean the whole city of Kohima, it said.
