The construction works to widen the road to a 2-lane from Unger to Tuli (Km 185 to Km 220 of NH 61/New NH-2) in Mokokchung district are expected to be completed by March 2025, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister TR Zeliang indicated on Wednesday.

The minister in-charge of National Highway (NH) is currently on a four-day tour beginning November 11 to inspect and assess the progress of key NH projects across five districts of Nagaland: Phek, Kiphire, Tuensang, Shamator, and Mokokchung. He is accompanied by officers of NPWD (NH).

In an update on the microblogging site X ,formerly Twitter, on November 13, he informed that the team met M/s KKB Project Pvt Ltd, the firm undertaking the Unger to Tuli 2-laning works. November 13 marked Day-III of the tour.

“They are behind schedule, but with a revised completion date of March 22, 2025, they are confident of meeting the target. I also wish them success and encourage them to carry out the work without compromising quality,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Deputy CM shared that some sections of the newly completed 2-lane road from Yisemyong to Unger are showing signs of damage and said that he had instructed the Executive Engineer (NH) of the Mokokchung Division to immediately direct the contractor to carry out repairs to prevent further deterioration.

He also informed that he met the survey team for NH-202 Package-I, being undertaken by Consultant Group CM Engineering, and said that at the current pace of work, the remaining stretch of Package-I should be completed by November end.

Progress of NH-202
There was also an interaction with Contractor M/s UCN Construction Co Pvt. Ltd, which is undertaking the work from Chuchuyimpang (0 km) to Chare (39 km) on NH-202. The progress of the work is good, and the contractor has so far carried out the work satisfactorily, Zeliang added. The target for completion of this stretch is June 18, 2025.

Meanwhile, on Day 2 of the tour, on November 12, the team interacted with the Chang Khulei Setshang, United Sangtam Likhüm Pumji, Eastern Nagaland Students' Federation (ENSF), and village councils, along with Minister P Bashang Chang and Advisor S Keoshu Yimchunger.

The tribal councils and village councils have assured support to the government, particularly the NH department, for the construction of the 2-lane road on NH-202, Zeliang said.

The DPR (Detailed Project Report) for Package-1, starting from Chare (39 km) to Chendang (120 km), was submitted last year. However, the sanction was delayed as the consultant group had to resurvey the stretch to incorporate land compensation as per the state government’s notification dated November 28, 2023, he added. He also claimed that the consultant was urged to expedite the survey so that the sanction can be accorded at the earliest.

Further, the road from Saddle village to Kuthur Village, under Tuensang District (NH-202), is under the Defect Liability Period (DLP), meaning the contractor is responsible for carrying out maintenance work. However, observing that no maintenance work has been carried out, the Deputy CM informed that the Executive Engineer (NH) has been directed to immediately give notice to the contractor to start the work within 10 days. Failing this, the contractor will be “terminated and blacklisted.”

Zeliang also noted that the Short Term Maintenance Contract (STMC) under the Kiphire Division and Tuensang Division is unsatisfactory, and the progress of work is not up to the mark. Respective Division Engineers will issue notices to the concerned contractors to improve the progress of work and complete the project within the stipulated period, as per the contract agreement, he added.
