Nagaland University calls for breaking down gender barriers

Kohima, March 6 (MExN): Nagaland University Kohima campus observed International Women’s day 2020 with the theme ‘I am Generation Equality: Securing Women’s right #eachforequal’ at ladies common room Kohima campus NU on March 6.
A DIPR report stated that Pro VC Nagaland University, Prof M Aleminla Ao delivering her message remarked that the day not only recognises the achievements of women who have excelled in their own fields but it mark a call of action for speeding gender equality.
Stating that the path of women’s equality has been long and challenging yet, she said that despite some progress real change has been slow in the world as not a single country can claim to have achieved gender equality. She said that time has come for all to realise how far women have come and what still needs to be done and take proactive role in breaking down the barriers.
She stressed on the need to equal share of chores at home, equal representation in politics and offices, equal in decision making bodies and equal value for girls and boy. She called on every one to collectively affirm in building a better world where all generations will live harmoniously free of violence and discrimination and where all will have equal rights and opportunity regardless of gender.
Gender equality requisite
for society to thrive
Prof Lungsang Zeliang, Department of Education speaking at the event said that women's rights and gender equality are taking centre stage this year and rightly so because it is a pre requisite for society to thrive. She however said that change in this direction has been unsatisfactory and terribly slow inspite of the collective efforts world over.
Lungsang also said that gender equality is not only about women's rights but is also about human rights, adding that it is time to challenge stereo types and take action for equality. She remarked that as women in Higher education in whatever capacity as an administrators, teaching or non teaching or as students or researchers we are the lucky ones who have a voice, who work in equal spaces and making a difference. She call on all individually and collectively, to contribute towards empowering women and do something meaningful to create an equal world and be true to this year's each for equal theme.
Lungsang said that the theme campaign ‘I am generation equality: realizing women's rights’ for an equal future marks the 25 anniversary of the Beijing declaration and platform for action by UN women, which was the most visionary declaration for empowerment of women everywhere. She added that that the campaign calls for bringing together next generation women leaders and girl leaders and also demands for equal pay equal sharing of unpaid care and domestic work, an end to sexual harassment and violence against women and girls, healthcare and equal participation in political life and decision making in all areas of life.
Also stressing on the urgent need to accelerate gender equality she challenged all to be instruments in removing the systemic barriers that hold back women from full participation in private or public domains and join hands in creating an equal and enabled world.

President NUSU Rhilo Mero speaking on the theme for the International women’s day being #EachForEqual said would not it be great to be in a world where we are no longer governed by the gender stereotyped laws or principles by the society, or would it not be even better if we could all pursue the same ambitions and dreams without any borders. He said that to make that happen each and every one of us must learn to treat each other as one and do our bit to bring about gender equality, than only we can move forward to a more stable, healthier and a richer world as together we should stand as Each for Equal.
